It's a Wash-Out

Water, water, everywhere - and not a drop to drink!

What a week!

Having battled - like the rest of the UK - through seemingly endless flurries of snow & worse during the previous 7 days, we finished up this week with seasonal extra - a fair few inches of rain water to paddle through across most of the Centre!

As water lapped at the sides of the hospital and the falconers' hut, the SOS team began to wonder if they might need a canoe to traverse the paths around the sanctuary. Luckily, falconer Matt came to the rescue with a makeshift pump (hastily converted from a pressure washer) to help clear the worst of the problems, whilst the birds looked on from the dry comfort of their perches with interest!

But every cloud has a silver lining, and a ray of sunshine appeared to dispel the damp and gloom in the guise of Tom Baker and his company 'Eastern Concrete'.

Tom has been a veritable guardian angel over the last year, having donated the concrete for the new pavilion base and also a base for two owl aviaries. This week, we have been immensely grateful for his further donation of £400 worth of gravel, which we needed to finish off three new aviaries.

A canny businessman, Tom started his company just over seven years ago with one lorry, imported from Canada. He has recently built a new yard at nearby Stowmarket in Suffolk to add to the existing one in Bury St Edmunds. As his lorries are of a specialist type, not found anywhere else in the area, we are particularly appreciative that Tom was able to make one them available to make the delivery of the much-needed gravel.

Most importantly, the day would not have been complete without 'Alfi', Eastern Concrete's company mascot. Alfi goes everywhere with his dad, Carlos, who was the very helpful driver of the day: Alfi spent the day obligingly directing operations from the lorry's cab!

So all in all, we enjoyed a cheering close to an otherwise rather soggy week. A massive “thank you” goes out once again to Tom from all at SOS, especially Maz who - as falconer and chief fundraiser - appreciates just how much it means for SOS to have such generous support.
