Unlike their wild counterparts, captive birds don't need to worry where their next meal is coming from. Here at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, our birds and animals are provided with a specialist diet by our falconers and keepers. But this food isn't just for our captive-bred birds... every patient in the hospital needs special care, including what they are fed. A recovering young Kestrel may go through 2 or 3 mice a day, so depending on how long they are with us, the cost of feeding them all adds up.

Whilst it's not possible to always replicate exactly what birds would eat in the wild, we try as much as possible to vary their diet so that they are kept healthy

The diets can include Chicks • Mice • Rabbit • Quail • Deer • Fish • Insects such as mealworms and crickets
