Conservation Officer with bird trainer experience

We are seeking a keen and outgoing individual to work for the charity in the unique role as Conservation Officer with some Avian Trainer experience. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in regards to native and non-native conservation that will make up the larger proportion of the role while supporting the Avian Team as much as possible for the remainder.

The role will require someone who will be competent in managing Suffolk Owl Sanctuary’s conservation projects both in and ex-situ, and deliver the objectives of the conservation strategy in line with SOS’s mission and vision. Our Conservation Officer will also work closely with the Hospital Lead of our Raptor Rehabilitation Hospital, playing assistive role in collecting, caring for, and rehabilitating sick and injured birds and responsible for the management of bird releases and hack pens. Conducting various aspects of scientific monitoring and/or conservation fieldwork to optimise animal well-being, wildlife monitoring, and habitat protection will also be included.

Along with this, you will also be required to engage with general day-to-day husbandry of our Avian Section, and occasionally the mammal section if needed. Assistance with training and flying birds of prey for demonstrations and other visitor experiences are necessary together with the ability to deliver talks, presentations, and behind-the-scenes experiences to visitors and VIP’s. Engaging with and answering questions from visitors during the normal course of duties are central to maintaining the positive visitor experience we are proud to provide.

Salary will be dependent on experience alongside which you will have the opportunity to join a workplace pension scheme, receive 28 days holiday per annum, and access many other employee benefits. Our shift pattern is a fixed 3-week rota with employees getting one weekend off per 3/4 weeks - these can be subject to change.
