Due to the way barn owls hunt, we must be sure this particular owl can sustain prolonged flight - which is tricky without the use of the primary feathers on one side! Currently he is being housed in a purpose-built private flight aviary and monitored daily for signs of a moult.
The camera is a handy tool to assess his movements without disturbing him. As you can see he can get around well thanks to strategically placed perches, so is able to maintain his fitness well in situ until the time comes we feel he has enough skill to be hacked back to the wild.
