This barn owl recently came in to SOS after being found roadside, suffering facial injuries. Having seemingly being blown onto the road, he is now being treated for abrasions to both eyes.
Sadly, new roads and developments now regularly cut through owls’ preferred hunting habitats, meaning instances such as this is a common occurrence. Barn owls in particular are so light in bodyweight that they easily get blown into oncoming traffic.
However, in recent decades, efforts have been made to protect wildlife from suffering this fate by creating natural ‘bridges’ over these roads in the form of high hedge-lines. This encourages birds (such as owls) to traverse these problematic roads at a height. Thoughtful management paired with a resurgence of wild meadow space, has led to a rise in species such as the barn owl and kestrel and has also helped to reduce the frequency of roadside accidents.
Sadly we do not yet know the outcome of this particular owl until his injuries begin to heal, however, he is going from strength to strength in our dedicated on-site hospital.
